A Fifty Year History of Court Reporting

Readback’s creator, InfraWare, Inc., is an innovator of documentation technologies and services with deep roots in workflow automation, machine learning, and compliance in highly-regulated industries. Accolades include four patents in machine learning to improve speech processing.

In 2017, InfraWare merged with a respected New England court reporting firm, gaining a 50-year history of deposition court reporting and over 67,000 completed proceedings. This collaboration led to a reimagining of what deposition reporting could be.

The result, Readback, embodies the disruption of a startup with the reassurance of a financially stable, successful company.

Technical & Market Insights

Most new products and services are launched based on either technical insight or market insight. Readback is a rare example of both types of insights coming together in beautiful harmony.

InfraWare noted three primary market insights:

  • First, the well-known shortage of stenographic court reporters is getting worse.
  • Second, attorneys and clients have been growing increasingly frustrated with escalating costs for court reporting services (especially endless add-on fees).
  • Finally, elite litigators were gladly paying much higher fees for real-time reporting to see the transcript as the steno operator worked.

Those elite litigators were getting an advantage, and we wanted to figure out how to deliver a similarly powerful experience to everyone.

The technical insight began with the recognition that stenographers spend more time playing back digital recordings to edit and proof their transcripts than they spend in each deposition.

We theorized that during a virtual deposition we could let one typist listen and transcribe in near-time. A second editor could listen on a short delay to correct errors left behind by the first typists. Yet a third could listen on a longer delay correcting the errors of the second editor, and so forth.

Using our patented speech recognition technology, the first “typist” could be AI, followed by human editors who analyze and correct the text as it develops.

The Bottom Line: Better Deposition Outcomes

Top litigators working on high-value cases and for clients with deep pockets don’t use real-time reporting just because they can afford to. They use it because they can’t afford not to. They are driving better deposition outcomes for their clients. Now, Readback brings that capability and much more to all litigators at a commodity cost.
